musicologist
Musicologist David E. Schneider teaches music history, theory, and chamber music at Amherst College, where he has been a professor since 1997. A frequent pre-concert lecturer and contributor of essays for concert programs, he is also a regular participant in scholarly conferences on his specialties, the life and music of Béla Bartók and the genre of the concerto. He is currently working on an article on Bartók’s Concertos for a special issue of the German journal Musik Theorie, a book of critical essays on the concerto, and a lecture for UCLA on Viennese composer Leo Fall’s operetta Die Rose von Stambul. Formerly a professional clarinetist with a specialty in contemporary music, he holds an A.B. in music from Harvard College and a Ph.D. in historical musicology from UC Berkeley. His book Bartók, Hungary, and the Renewal of Tradition was published by the University of California Press in 2006.
